Gary Hovey began metalworking in a fine art foundry in 1981 where he became the head of the metal shop. Following this he gained years of experience as a skilled welder and metal fabricator. Since 2004 Gary has been shaping forks, knives, and spoons into realistic forms and calling them Hoveyware. Hovey + Flatware = Hoveyware.
This chapter of his art career began in 2004, ten years after the onset of Parkinson's disease. "Since I can't work a regular job anymore, making my art gives me purpose. I want my story to inspire others to look for what they can do despite what has happened to them."
Producing and showing my work is both very challenging and very therapeutic for me. There has been a continual string of people who have urged me to continue developing my art. Many have helped me by transporting materials, building a workshop, donating flatware, working with me in the shop, and buying sculptures. I want that love to show in my work.

Gary lives in rural New Knoxville, Ohio with his wife, Tonnie. They met in a high school art class and got married in 1979. They have four grown children, pursuing careers of their own. Tonnie, a graphic designer by trade, is part of the Hoveyware team as well. She designs the composition of the large outdoor pieces, offers critique of work in progress, and handles the paperwork.
Jim and Gary met over 35 years ago as neighbors and soon became best friends. For the first seven years of Hoveyware, Gary built his sculptures in an outbuilding at Jim's. As Gary's Parkinson's progressed, Jim began pitching in to help as needed.
As a man of many talents, Jim Perrine has been a leather tooler, custom log home builder, chauffeur, auto mechanic, project manager, heavy equipment operator and welder. He's been a fan and supporter of Hoveyware since the beginning. Jim officially joined the Hoveyware Sculptures team as a welder and artist in 2019.
Hoveyware Sculptures are about wildlife, welding, and humor. Each sculpture is made entirely of stainless steel forks, knives, spoons, and occasionally, a pie server or other tableware. Most of the flatware is recycled. Different patterns in flatware add texture and interest to each piece; stainless steel reflects the surroundings so it looks at home in nearly any situation.
